What is safe?

More important than what is safe is what to avoid.
Here is a list of ingredients to AVOID:

whey, casein, caseinate, butter flavor, lactic acid (lactic acid derived from dairy products), natural or artificial flavors such as milk or butter flavor, and sodium caseinate.(non-dairy simply means less than 0.5% milk by weight)

Also be aware that some items are manufactured on the same equipment or in the same facility.  A lot of things that were safe are now not because of the economy (not having 'safe plants' or 'safe equipment')

There is NOTHING that is safe.  I could not tell you to go pick up such and such and promise it is safe.  So when people ask me this I laugh inside.  Here are some more commonly used  items I have checked, and the last time I checked they were 'safe'.
**This is not a comprehensive list.  And it may not be up to date.  Any of these items may become unsafe at anytime.  ALWAYS check ingredients, even on previously safe items**

Thankfully, though the allergy community does not have much support, the vegan community has made their voices known..  If an item is certified as vegan it has no animal product in it (ie no dairy).  This can be helpful when searching for items
